Behold the lamb of God

In Isaiah 40 the voice crying out in the wilderness says, ‘prepare the way for the LORD.’ and when the Lord shows up, Isaiah writes. ‘Behold the Lord God comes with might.’ (Isaiah 40:10). The expectation is weighty—God arriving in power.

When that promised voice finally appears in the New Testament in the person of John the Baptist, the announcement takes an unexpected turn. John does not speak first of might or power. In fact, he does not speak of power at all. Instead, as he sees Jesus approaching, he says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).

The wonder of the first Advent is that God did not come first as a king, but as a Lamb.

Notice that John the Baptist does not whisper his words. He shouts them. Behold! This is a proclamation and we ought to hear it that way.

The message of the first Advent for all who believe in Jesus is this – Your sin has been taken away.

If you believe in Jesus, your sin has been taken away.
