Hemmed In: Reflections on Psalm 139:5

Hemmed In

Swept up by a whirlwind ,

The world around me looks upside down

No sun rays only shadows

My foes Darkness and Chaos attach to me like friends

I see the grave of my dreams

I remember momentarily my former Joy

My life full of unstained candor

Like spring my steps sure

My eyes full of laughter and expectation

I’m free to dance in the wind

But in this new reality,

I am caged in

unable to take flight

Guarded by my misery

I can’t see through the haze of despair

Wearied by my remembrance

I call to my redeemer : Help me

I feel His hand on me,

It’s steadying me and comforting me,

And yet it keeps me here in this place that I long to flee

I seize to struggle ,

My liberator is here

He means me no harm,

My freedom is at Hand

I settle in and wait

Wait for His appointed time

Wait for the annihilation of my foes

Wait for joy to return

Though I now lay in tears,

This whirlwind He will abate

My deliverance is certain.
