As I think about the topic of creativity this month, I couldn’t help but think of how it all started for me. The nights of electricity rationing and long holiday breaks at the farm away from my full schedule and friends in the city, created an environment that allowed me to be creative. As a kid, being in a different environment away from friends or not being able to enjoy the pleasures that electricity afforded felt awful, however during those monotonous days,I had time to just be and in the process of being, I was able to create. Boredom played a huge part in my creative journey.
I now see boredom as a great tool to spark and stir creativity. So when my kids tell me they are bored, I remind them it’s an opportunity for them discover something new. When you find the pace of your life slowing down, instead of finding more ways to fill up your schedule, use that time to discover, to be creative.
I wrote this poem a couple of summers ago sitting in the hot Houston heat while my boys were participating in a swim meet.
I Wonder What It will be Like
I wonder what it will be like
When darkness has no place,
When the sun silently says goodbye
As it welcomes His glorious light.
I wonder what it will be like
When life’s curtain is replaced,
And the veil that blinds my eyes
Is finally set a blaze.
Will the sky still hold its place at the awesomeness of His gaze?
Will I fall flat on my face when I see Him in every broken place?
On that day when the lion lays with the lamb,
When the earth brings forth without pain,
And everything is in its rightful place.
On that day when my weariness is lifted,
And I’m clothed with garments of praise.
Will there be words enough to express the magnitude of His grace?
What heavenly chorus will the saints sing?
All creatures will marvel at his awesome deeds.
And all creation will agree,
Great is our God and greatly to be praised!
