I will never forget how it felt when I heard for the first time I was pregnant or when I heard of the passing away of a loved one or when I heard my dad had been kidnapped. All these news were life changing, life altering, my world was rocked. As shocking and life changing as these events were they only affected me and my family at best. When the 2019 /2020 covid shut down happened, that was significant news affecting not just an individual but most of the world. Now imagine an even greater event affecting ALL the visible and invisible world, All people on earth, and every principality in the heavenly. Gods people had longed for and waited for their coming messiah. Finally at the appointed time Christ was born.
As you read the story, linger a little and think of the setting being described. Is this the kind of place you would choose for a savior? Then think about the significance of what has just happened. (fulfillment of promise). As I read Luke 2 the smallness, the obscurity of the place our savior is born is not lost on me or the fact that there is no room in the inn, or that the baby is in a manger and wrapped in swaddling cloth. Our savior chose to be born in these circumstances. Not in a palace but in humble circumstances. None of it was a coincidence, it was part of God’s purpose and plan. Does the place of birth or the humble circumstances change the Superiority of the one being born? Heaven certainly did not think so. The first to receive these news according to Luke, shepherds. The message;
“Good news for All! Born this day in the city of David, Christ the Lord.”
The messenger an Angel and just as the shepherds are coming to terms with what they are hearing, they see a multitude of Angels praising God. What? Can you imagine your birth story being announced by Angels !
While it might be confusing to us to hear such a grand announcement and find the child in such a place, the angels, the witnesses from heaven had no such confusion. Even in his humble state, they are confirming his superiority overall. Though he has taken the form of a servant in human form, God has bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, to which every knee in heaven and on earth will bow. This child in a manger is the Christ, the one who the world had been waiting for, this child is Lord.
While this birth happened 2000 years ago, it changed everything. Because He was born, we who had no identity have now received the identity as Gods people, we who had not received mercy have received mercy from God. (1peter 2:10) This Christmas as we think of our savior let us worship Him and follow Him. Glory to God in the highest!
